About the job

The Managed Cloud Services team is currently looking for a Manager, Database Platform to lead and advise our regional Data Platform team. This role will be responsible for guiding a talented group of Data Platform Administrators who manage a variety of technologies, including Oracle, SQL Server, Postgres, Kafka, Redis, Snowflake, and more.

 

In this position, you’ll collaborate closely with customers, analysts, developers, and other implementation team members to engineer enterprise installations and oversee, diagnose, debug, design, and prototype SAS and third-party enterprise class software systems. You’ll also provide valuable support to the SAS Cloud team by offering expertise, mentoring, and best practices concerning these technologies and their architecture.

 

You’ll lead a team of highly skilled professionals delivering RDBMS and Cloud Native technologies, as well as related services, to both external and internal customers in our data centers and in the public cloud. The role involves building and maintaining these services, assisting teams managing applications connected to these platforms, and collaborating with other managers and technical leads in a highly cross-matrixed organization.

 

Your responsibilities will include ensuring your team members are consistent, strong contributors within a high-performance environment, coordinating with peers to achieve objectives, communicating effectively with upper management, and helping to improve and implement services, processes, and procedures in a rapidly evolving, fast-paced setting.

 

As a Manager, you will:

  • Guide, monitor, strategize, and assist with large fast-paced ticket queues – advising on ways to develop and improve response times while appropriately handling escalations and priorities due to business needs and resource availability.
  • Design strategies to alleviate/reduce stress on the team in a high-pressure/high-demand environment.
  • Interface with internal and external customers to understand business and technical requirements to assess feasibility and priority.
  • Interacts with internal customers to develop requirements and initiate and/or implement technology solutions to meet these requirements. Maintaining interaction with the appropriate function sponsors and/or governance committees.
  • Maintains an awareness of and researche new technologies as they relate to the delivery of data platform technology – both internally and with the SAS product itself.
  • Keeps group members informed, manages administrative aspects of the department including personnel matters. Sets performance goals/standards/objectives for the team. Performs all management responsibilities for the team including coaching and fostering growth and development.
  • Ensures system support documentation and associated budgeting is developed and maintained completely and on a timely basis including training for international and operational teams.
  • Monitors ticket and technology usage patterns and the operating environment of all major systems within area of responsibility; proposes and coordinates implementation of improvements.
  • Manage vendor relationships for these technologies.
  • Manage all aspects of the department including teamwork, performance management, providing feedback, and staff professional growth through collaboration with SAS Human Resources, SAS Education and Executive Leadership.
  • Develop, organize, prioritize, and assign objectives and responsibilities consistent with department, division, and corporate goals.
  • Provide leadership to the team through mentoring, training, and managing the activities of the team.
  • Manage and lead project scoping and scheduling of projects; track progress of individual tasks and alert management and stakeholders for any concerns meeting schedules.
  • Ensure that projects are completed and implemented in a timely manner while following established procedures and schedules.
  • Be responsible for tactical management of a functional area, feature, product, or multiple products or solutions, involving senior leadership as required in major decisioning.
  • Function as an advisor to employees regarding daily tasks, projects, processes, and immediate operations.
  • Ensure all applicable security policies and processes are followed to support the organization's secure software development goals.

 Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field or related industry. 
  • 8+ year administration of Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Kafka, Redis, or Snowflake. Two years of experience in a leadership/team lead role
  • Experience with Kubernetes and public cloud provider technologies (Azure, AWS)
  • Experience with Python, PERL, or other shell/batch scripting languages
  • Proficiency in Unix, Linux, and Windows Operating Systems
  • Experience with ticketing and documentation systems, ideally with Service Now, JIRA, and Confluence
  • Great ability to supervise and coach individual contributors with varying skill sets in a high-pressure environment
  • A creative thinker who identifies alternative solutions to complex problems and improves efficiency of processes and procedures
  • Effective communicator with a proven ability to facilitate understanding across organizational levels
  • Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.
